A real estate agent called me at 8 in the morning from a parking lot off Hollister in the Isla Vista area of Goleta. She had a showing at 9, clients already on their way, and her LS 500 was sitting there dead to her fob. Push-to-start did nothing. Screen said "Key not authenticated." Here is what actually happened: the CR2032 was original from 2018. Three years of slow drain. The battery voltage had dropped low enough that the B9 DST-AES handshake between the fob and the body ECU was failing intermittently, then finally gave up completely overnight. Fresh CR2032, re-seated the board, cleared the communication fault through diagnostics, and re-registered the fob.
Total hands-on time was about 20 minutes. I walked the doors, tested the trunk release, checked that the touch-sensor unlock on both front handles responded, and confirmed push-to-start from cold.
She stood next to me the whole time, checking her phone, watching the clock. When the engine turned over she just nodded and got in. Made her 9am showing. The dealer would have meant a tow and a wait, and the showing would have been gone.
