A guy over at Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard had just picked up a 1998 Lexus LS from a private seller. Clean car, low miles for the year, one key. The seller told him getting a spare was easy. He believed that until he called the Lexus dealer.

I drove out, confirmed the key type, checked the factory fob ID against what was in his hand, and got to work. Cut a new blade to the vehicle, programmed the transponder, and synced the remote portion so lock, unlock, and the third button all fired clean. Tested it at every door. Started the car twice. Whole thing took about forty minutes including the time it took him to find parking for his boat trailer.
He paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted and left with two working keys instead of one. The part that stuck with me was that he almost just lived with one key because the dealer price felt like something you just had to accept on a Lexus. You don't.
