How the Lexus GS Key System Changed Over the Years
Second Generation (S160)
Lexus stepped things up here with a transponder key using an ID33 or Texas 11 chip paired to the engine ECU. It is a traditional high security blade, no push button start, no smart key fob. Programming happens on-board, which means we can handle it right in your driveway without any server connections or dealer involvement.
Third Generation (S190)
Lexus moved to a remote head key for this generation, combining the transponder and remote buttons into one unit. Your GS uses an ID47 or Texas 4C chip with the Lexus Immobilizer II system. Programming requires OBD-II access, so we plug into the diagnostic port under your dash and pair the key right there.
Fourth Generation (L10)
This is where things got serious. Lexus introduced the smart key system with push button start, using an ID47 or ID46 chip and a laser cut emergency blade. Programming requires both OBD-II access and server authentication through Lexus's system, which adds a step but we carry the subscriptions and equipment to handle it on-site.
Fourth Generation Facelift (L10)
Lexus kept the same smart key platform but tightened security further with ID47 chips and mandatory server authentication for programming. This covers the GS 300, GS 350, GS F, and GS 450h. We handle these with Autel IM608 and our Toyota Tech Info subscription, so you skip the tow truck and the dealer waiting room.
Which Key Does Your Lexus GS Use?
A traditional metal key with a transponder chip hidden inside the head. You turn it in the ignition to start the car. The remote for locks is a separate fob.
Your lock and unlock buttons are built right into the key head. One piece to carry instead of a separate key and remote.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, press the button to start. There is a hidden laser cut emergency blade inside the fob for dead battery situations.
Same smart key design as the 2013-2015 but with tighter security protocols. Push button start with proximity detection and a laser cut emergency blade tucked inside.

Common Lexus GS Key Problems
Transponder Failure in Second Gen (1998-2005)
Transponder chips in early GS 300 and GS 430 keys degrade over time. That happens with 20+ year old electronics. Key turns, starter cranks, immobilizer cannot read the chip. We clone the chip or program a fresh key on-site, usually under 30 minutes.
Smart Key Battery Drain (2013-2020)
Fob dies every few weeks with a fresh CR2032. The fourth-gen GS proximity loop drains a cell parked too close to the car, like on a counter near the garage wall. Move the fob further; persists past that, the internals are cooked.
Immobilizer Sync Loss (2006-2012)
People assume a dead battery killed the key. The ECU lost sync with the transponder after the car battery dropped or got disconnected. Your third-gen GS needs a relearn to re-pair key and immobilizer. We handle it through OBD-II, no parts, just the right gear.
Laser Blade Wear (2013-2020)
Check the emergency blade first on any fourth-gen GS with door cylinder or backup-start trouble. High mileage wears the laser-cut profile, and a worn blade fails the emergency cylinder. Blade is it, we cut fresh on-site with our laser machine.
Can You Program a Lexus GS Key Yourself?
Yes, if you have one working master key. There is an on-board procedure using the accelerator and brake pedals with specific timing. It works for adding a duplicate transponder key, but you still need a properly cut high security blade and the right chip, so most people call us anyway.
No self-programming option here. Your third gen GS requires professional OBD-II diagnostic equipment to pair a new key to the Lexus Immobilizer II system.
No DIY option. The smart key system requires OBD-II programming plus server authentication through Lexus's system. You need a professional locksmith or dealer for this one.
Same as the 2013-2015. No self-programming. Server authentication is mandatory, and the security protocols are even tighter on these later models.
