Got a call from a GS owner over in Las Posas Park, Camarillo. She said the dealer quoted her for a full smart key replacement because the fob was falling apart. Shell cracked, rubber buttons mushy and half worn off, emergency blade wiggling loose in the slot.
I drove out and met her in the garage. Her fob, FCC ID HYQ14AAB with part number 271451-0140, had the exact wear pattern I see on third-gen GS smart keys that have been on a keyring for fourteen years. The rubber around the Lock button was basically gone and the shell had a hairline split along the seam. But the circuit board inside, the 271451-0140 board with the Texas Instruments DST80 chip, was clean and working fine.
I popped the shell open on her workbench, moved the board and chip into a fresh housing, pressed in new button pads, and cut a replacement TOY48 emergency blade using my Lishi to decode the existing wafers. Tested all four buttons, verified proximity detection at both front handles and the trunk, and confirmed push-button start from the driver's seat.
The whole thing took about twenty-five minutes. She kept the same programmed internals, same chip, same FCC ID. No reprogramming needed because the brain of the key never changed.
She saved a good chunk over what the dealer wanted, and she didn't have to leave the house.
