I was over near Village at the Park on a Tuesday, one of those overcast Camarillo mornings where it almost looks like it might rain but never does.
The owner had a 2011 GS that had been her daily for years. The smart key was showing its age: the rubber buttons were soft and barely readable, the shell had a hairline crack running toward the battery cover, and the emergency blade slot had enough play in it that the blade would shift if you held the fob wrong. The car still started. The fob still worked. But she knew it was on borrowed time.

When I got there, I opened the fob on the tailgate of my van. The circuit board and the transponder inside were fine. There was no corrosion, no cracked solder, nothing wrong with the electronics at all. The shell was the problem. I transferred the working internals into a fresh housing, seated new rubber buttons, and verified the emergency blade cut matched her lock. Took about twenty minutes on site.
Then I walked every function: lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, touch unlock on both door handles, and confirmed the start button saw the fob cleanly from inside the cabin. Everything behaved.
She got her key back looking and feeling new, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted, without leaving her driveway.
