A woman parked near the shops in Old Town Camarillo and came back to a GS that would not acknowledge her fob at all. No door handle response, no startup, nothing. She had already swapped the battery at the CVS down the street, so she figured it was something deeper. Her assumption was the immobilizer had locked her out entirely.
When I got there, I asked her to show me the battery she pulled. CR1632, right brand. But when I opened the fob on the trunk lid where I could see clearly, the positive contact was sitting at an angle. Whoever changed it before her, or maybe she had done it herself a while back, had pried the cover instead of sliding it. The clip was slightly deformed.
I straightened the contact with a small pick, reseated the same battery she'd bought, and snapped the cover correctly. The GS woke right up. Door handles responded, start button saw the fob, every button tested clean.
She asked what the dealer would have done. Probably ordered a new fob first, then scheduled a programming appointment on top of that. We were done in about fifteen minutes on the street and she was back to her errands.
Not every call needs a new key. Sometimes it just needs someone who looks at the small stuff first.
