Got a call from a woman parked in the lot off Madera Road, not far from the East Simi Valley side of things. She had one key left for her 2007 GS, and it had been acting up for a couple of weeks.
Touch unlock on the driver's door was hit or miss. The start button sometimes took two or three tries. She figured it was a car problem, not a key problem, and had been putting off dealing with it.
Then one morning it stopped working entirely. The dash showed a key-not-detected warning and that was that.
She called the dealer first. They told her to tow it in, said they'd need to keep it for a day or two, and gave her a number that made her set the phone down for a second.
I pulled up, opened the fob housing on the trunk lid, and the CR1632 inside looked original. Not corroded, but reading almost nothing on the meter. Swapped the cell, re-seated everything clean, and the fob came right back. Touch unlock on both handles, all four buttons, start function -- all of it working again.
Then she asked about a spare, because she never wanted to be in that spot again with just one key. That's the smarter conversation. Adding a second smart key to a 2007 GS means going through the OBD port with professional programming equipment. Not a button sequence, not an ignition trick -- actual tool-based enrollment. I had the blank and the equipment with me.
Forty-five minutes total. She had two working keys, the dealer never saw the car, and the tow truck was never called. She kept saying she wished she'd done this a month earlier when the touch unlock first started acting up.
She probably should have.
