I got a call from someone up in the Big Sky neighborhood in Simi Valley. He had a 2004 Lexus GS and had been using a key that looked fine on the outside but had been giving him grief for weeks. Intermittent starts, fob buttons working one day and not the next. He finally had a morning where it just refused to cooperate and he was already running late.
He thought it was the battery. He had swapped a battery in, but grabbed the wrong one at the drugstore. Common mistake. The one he put in was slightly thicker and was bowing the contact plate just enough to make intermittent connection instead of a solid one.
I pulled up in my van, popped the fob open on my workbench, and the problem was visible immediately. Wrong cell, contact slightly deformed from the pressure. I seated the correct CR1616, straightened the contact, and tested every button from across the parking area before I even handed it back. Lock, unlock, the third button, all crisp.
While I was there I checked that the blade was cut correctly and hadn't worn to the point of causing ignition issues. It was fine. The whole job took maybe twenty minutes.
He mentioned he'd been quoted a full fob replacement by the dealer. For a wrong-battery installation. Getting a second opinion on a key problem costs nothing when you call a mobile locksmith first.
