A guy in Sterling Hills here in Camarillo had picked up a used 2010 Lexus GS from a private seller a few weeks before he called me. Nice car, clean interior, one key.
The seller had mentioned getting a spare "at some point." He went to the Lexus dealer to get that spare and came out with a quote that made him sit in the parking lot and start searching his phone.
He found me through EZ Car Keyz and asked if the dealer number was even real. It was real. Dealer pricing on a smart key for this GS, with programming, is not casual money. I told him I could do the same job for a lot less and drive out to him.
I met him in his driveway. The job was adding a second smart key while his one working fob was still present, which kept it from becoming an all-keys-lost situation and kept the process cleaner. I used my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port to register the new fob to the vehicle's security system, then cut the emergency insert blade to match his door and ignition. Tested every button, walked the door handles, confirmed the start button recognized both fobs, and made sure the insert key turned in the door cylinder.
He ended up with two fully working keys. And he got something the dealer quote didn't include: the peace of mind that if one fob ever goes missing, the next call is a simpler add-a-key job instead of a full all-keys-lost reset. On a vehicle like this, that difference matters.
The dealer came up exactly once in the conversation, as the number he was trying to avoid. After that, we just talked about the car.
