2017 Lexus GS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2017 Lexus GS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a homeowner in Las Posas Estates, in Camarillo. His 2017 Lexus GS was sitting in the driveway and not going anywhere. He'd had a tow company lined up, but the HOA gate into Las Posas Estates has a commercial vehicle approval process, and the flatbed wasn't on the list. The tow company turned around at the gate. So he called me instead.

I came through behind a resident heading in around mid-morning. The GS was parked in the driveway, not in a garage, which made the job clean. He had one working fob and needed a second registered to the car.

I pulled my kit from the van, connected through the OBD port, and ran the key registration sequence. The 2017 GS smart key system requires diagnostic equipment to add or replace a fob. There's no button trick, no ignition cycle, nothing like that. It's all done through the diagnostic port, with the right software talking to the vehicle's security system. Once the new fob was registered, I tested every button, tested the door handle touch unlock on both front doors, confirmed the start button recognized the fob from the driver's seat, and checked the emergency insert blade in the door lock cylinder.

The whole job was done in his driveway. His GS never left Las Posas Estates. He didn't need to tow it, didn't need HOA paperwork for a flatbed, and didn't need a dealer appointment on someone else's schedule.

The dealer comparison came up at the end, almost as a footnote. He'd called the dealer before calling me, and what they quoted him was a lot more than what he paid. That part honestly wasn't the point of the call. The point was getting back into his car without a tow truck that was never going to clear the gate anyway.
