My GS shows a key warning on the dash even with fresh batteries. What's going on?

A few possibilities, and they're not all fob problems.

The most common one: the new battery is the wrong type. The 2017 GS fob takes a CR1632 specifically. If someone installed a CR2032 because it was close in size, it can seat poorly and cause intermittent contact, which reads exactly like a dead or missing fob to the car.

If the battery is correct and seated right, the next thing to check is whether the warning is specific to one door handle or shows up even at the start button. Touch unlock failing at one door but working at another usually points to a handle sensor on that door, not the fob itself. A warning that shows up at the start button with a good battery is more likely a registration issue or, less commonly, a failing fob board.

If it's happening on your only fob, get it looked at before it fails completely. All-keys-lost situations are solvable, but they take longer than a standard spare-key job.
