Got a call from a woman near the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center. She had a 2005 Lexus GS with one smart key, and it stopped starting the car. Push the button, dash says "Smart key not in vehicle," nothing happens. She held the fob right against the start button, which is the backup move Lexus describes in the owner's manual. Still nothing.
She called the Lexus dealer. They told her to tow it in, leave it, and they could look at it in two days. She had work the next morning.
I got there around 7 PM. Popped the fob open on the hood. The CR1632 was corroded at the negative terminal, and the contact spring on the 271451-0140 board had a tiny green bloom on it. Cleaned the board contact, seated a fresh CR1632, and tested proximity unlock on all four doors. Worked.
But I still ran the full check. Plugged into OBD to read the Smart Key ECU and verify it was registering the fob's rolling code handshake without dropout. No codes stored. Trunk button, lock, unlock, panic, all four buttons on the HYQ14AAB responded clean.
The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes. She did not need a new fob, did not need a tow, and did not need to miss work. Saved a good chunk over what the dealer quoted just to diagnose it.
