I was already out in Simi Valley, finishing a job near the Bridle Path neighborhood, when a call came in. Owner of a 2005 Lexus GS, parked at her place off one of the quieter streets over there. She had one fob, no spare, and it stopped waking the car up. The push-button start wasn't responding, the door handles weren't triggering, nothing.

She had already done the thing people do: swapped the CR1632 herself. Still nothing.

When I pulled up, she handed me the fob and I could feel the issue before I even opened it. The battery was in there, but when I popped the case the positive contact had taken a small bend, probably from a previous battery swap done with a flat screwdriver. The cell wasn't making a clean connection on one side. On the other hand, even after I fixed that, the fob range was still shorter than it should've been.

She needed a full replacement fob registered to the car. I connected to the OBD port, ran the pairing sequence, and cut the emergency insert blade on site. The whole job took about forty minutes parked in her driveway.

She mentioned the dealer quoted her a significant wait for the fob to come in, plus the appointment to program it, and a total she wasn't happy about. She said she found me while sitting in her driveway wondering what to do next.

The new fob worked on the first door touch. She checked all four buttons herself before I left, one at a time.
