A woman pulled into the Premium Outlets Area parking lot one afternoon, shut the car off, and the 2015 GS just stopped acknowledging her fob. Touch unlock on the driver door did nothing. The push-button start showed a key-not-detected warning on the dash. She used the mechanical insert key to get in, but the car wouldn't start. She sat there a while before someone suggested calling me.
I got there and she already had a story ready: the fob had been acting up for about three weeks, range was getting shorter, and a couple of times the car had asked her to hold the fob against the start button. That last detail told me something. A fresh cell, correct seating, cleaned contacts. I closed it up and tested touch unlock at both front doors. Both came back immediately.
Then I walked every button, confirmed the start button recognized the fob from normal pocket distance, and checked range across the lot. Everything clean.
She asked if she had needed a whole new fob. She didn't. The fix was the kind of thing that gets misread as a failing key because the symptoms pile up fast once the contact goes bad. A new fob from the dealer on this car, programmed, runs way more than what she paid today. She drove out of that lot without touching the insert key once.
