Got a call from someone parked near the Camarillo Library. Her 2015 Lexus GS was throwing "Key not detected" on the dash, and the push-button start was completely dead. She had already swapped the CR1632 that morning.
When I got there she was sitting on a bench with the fob in her lap, pressing the start button through the window like that would help. I asked if I could see the key. The CR1632 was in there, but it was a hair too thick. She had grabbed a CR2032 off the rack at the pharmacy. Same diameter, different thickness. The case closed, but the battery was under pressure and the contact wasn't sitting flush against the board (281451-2110 on these HYQ14FBA units).
I popped in a correct CR1632, seated it clean, and closed the fob. Doors responded on the first touch of the handle. Start button fired the engine with no message on the dash. I walked every function: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All good.
Then I checked her backup mechanical key inside the fob and made sure it still turned the driver's door cylinder, because if that battery mix-up happened again on the road she would need it.
She thought the whole smart key system had failed. It was one wrong battery from a blister pack that looked close enough. Took me about ten minutes on site. A fraction of what the dealer would have charged just to look at it.
