Out in the Simi Hills, a guy called me after his key blade snapped in the ignition of his 2000 Lexus GS. Half the blade was still seated in the cylinder. He had already called one other locksmith who told him over the phone that the cylinder was probably damaged and quoted him a full ignition replacement. He wanted a second opinion before agreeing to tear apart a twenty-four-year-old lock.
When I got there, the fragment was in deep enough that it was not coming out with fingers, but the cylinder itself was not damaged. I extracted the broken piece with the right tool, working carefully so the wafer surfaces stayed clean and readable. Then I decoded the lock from the cylinder itself, cut a fresh blade to match, and programmed the replacement key through the OBD port.
The 2000 GS uses a remote head key where the fob, the blade, and the transponder are all one unit. His original fob housing was intact, just the blade was gone, so I was able to orient the replacement correctly and test everything on site: doors, remote functions, start, and the key-not-detected warning staying off.
The cylinder never came out. The car looked exactly the same when I drove away as it did when I pulled up. The other locksmith's estimate would have meant a new cylinder, new keys, and a much longer job. This one was done at the curb.
