Got a call from a guy near the Rose Shopping Center in Oxnard. His 2020 Lexus GS was sitting in a lot, dead to his fob. He had been out of town for a week, came back, and nothing. No chirp from the lock button, no response from the door handles, dash showing "Key not detected" when he held the fob to the start button for the backup procedure.
He had already called the Lexus dealer. Earliest opening was two days out, and that was just to look at it. A tow on top of that.
I got there in about 35 minutes. Popped the door with my tools, connected my IM608 to the OBD port. The smart ECU still had both of his keys registered, so this was not an all-keys-lost situation. But the dead CR1632 had caused a communication fault that the backup coil could not override. I have seen this on the GS and the older IS models where the fob sits dead long enough that the ECU logs a persistent fault code and stops polling.
Swapped the CR1632, cleared the fault, and ran the full check. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic button. Both front door handles responding to touch. Push-button start firing clean on the first tap.
He drove home that same afternoon. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes on site, and he saved a good chunk over what the dealer plus tow would have cost him.
