Start with the battery. If you haven't replaced it recently, do that first and use the correct CR1616, not a thicker substitute. If it's still flaky after that, open the fob and look at the battery contacts and the solder points on the board near each button. A fob that's been dropped will sometimes show a hairline crack near one of the button contacts that's hard to spot until you're looking for it.

If range is fine but one button is the problem, that's usually the button contact pad wearing out, which is a known annoyance on fobs this age. Replacement shells are available. The board transfers over.
