1998 Lexus GS Remote head key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call around 10pm from a guy in Montecito, over near Hammonds Beach. He was in an underground parking garage with zero keys to his 1998 Lexus GS. His only remote head key was just gone. He'd checked his pockets, retraced through the stairwell, checked the elevator floor. Nothing.
He was ready to call a tow truck just to get the car somewhere safe overnight. Didn't know his VIN, didn't have registration on him.
I kept him on the phone. Told him to look at the base of the windshield, driver's side. He found the 17-digit VIN. Then I had him pull up his insurance app, and the registration was right there. With that VIN I already knew the key type, the 4C chip, and the cut profile before I left the shop. Pre-cut the blade and had the HYQ1512V remote head key with a fresh CR1616 ready to go.
Under the garage lights I programmed the 4C transponder to his immobilizer ECU using my VVDI Key Tool, paired the remote, and tested all three buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk. Then a cold start to make sure the immobilizer handshake was clean.
He just stood there watching the dash, waiting for the security light. It stayed off. He drove home that night.
The whole thing took less than an hour. The dealer was closed anyway, and the tow alone would have eaten a good chunk of what I charged him for the entire job.
