Cold Spring in Montecito sits up in the hills, and the properties up there tend to have long driveways and garages that are more like buildings. That's where I was on a Tuesday evening for a 1998 Lexus GS that hadn't moved in about four days.
The owner had one fob and it had stopped working. Not intermittently, just flat stopped. He assumed the car was the problem. He'd already called a shop in town that told him to have it towed to a Lexus dealer, which would have meant a few days minimum.
When I got there, I popped the fob open on my tailgate. The CR1616 inside had voltage so low it barely registered. Once I seated a fresh cell and confirmed the contacts were clean, we tested range. Better, but the remote still wasn't triggering lock and unlock the way it should at a normal distance. That told me the battery wasn't the whole story.
His fob needed to be reprogrammed to the car. On a '98 GS, there is an onboard procedure for this, but it only works cleanly when you have a working key already in the sequence, and it needs to be done correctly or the car drops all registered fobs and you're starting from scratch. I walked through the procedure with my equipment, confirmed the fob registered, and tested all three buttons a few times over to make sure the signal was reading solid.
He mentioned the dealer had been mentioned to him as the only option. I didn't argue the point. He could see the car was running and the remote was doing what it was supposed to do, and I was still parked in his driveway.
