Got a call from a guy in the Mountain View neighborhood in Fillmore. His 2008 Lexus LS had been sitting in his driveway for a week while he was on a business trip. Came home, pressed the fob, nothing. Held the HYQ14AAB right against the start button for the backup coil read, still nothing. Just "Key is not detected" on the multi-info display.
He already had a Thursday slot at the dealer. It was Tuesday. He didn't want to wait or pay for a tow.
I pulled up within the hour. Got the door open with the emergency insert blade hidden inside the fob housing, then connected my diagnostic tool through the OBD-II port. Both of his registered keys were still in the smart ECU memory, no erasure, no corruption. The CR1632 had gone completely flat while the car sat, and the resulting communication fault between the fob and the ID code box had stuck. The backup coil on the start button wasn't clearing it either, which happens on these when the battery voltage drops below a certain threshold.
Fresh CR1632, fault code clear through the smart key system module, and a full relearn cycle. Took about 25 minutes.
I walked every function after: all four doors on touch unlock, trunk release, start button from driver seat and passenger seat. He stood there watching the dash the whole time, like he was waiting for the warning to come back.
He drove to work the next morning and cancelled that Thursday appointment.
