A guy in the Westside neighborhood of Santa Barbara called me around 11 PM on a Tuesday. His 2009 Lexus SC 430 was sitting in the driveway with the top down, and his only key had just stopped turning the engine over. It would crank, the security light on the dash would blink, and then nothing. He thought the starter was going.
It was not the starter. The 4D-67 transponder chip in his TOY48 key had stopped communicating with the immobilizer ECU. The car was doing exactly what it was designed to do: rejecting an unrecognized signal.
I pulled up, connected to the OBD-II port, and read the immobilizer. The system showed zero registered keys, which told me the transponder had degraded enough that the car dropped it from memory. That happens on older 4D chips. I programmed a new TR60-PT with a fresh 4D-67 chip, cut the blade to match his door lock, and registered it to his VIN through the diagnostic port.
He sat on the front steps the whole time, watching. When the engine caught on the first turn, he just kind of nodded and said, "Huh." That was it.
The whole thing took about 25 minutes. A dealer would have meant a flatbed, a wait until morning, and a bill that would have been a lot more than mine.
