Got a call from a guy near Arroyo Vista Community Park in Moorpark. He had a 2004 Lexus IS300 and wanted a spare key, not because anything was broken, but because he only had one and his wife had been asking him to get a backup for months. He finally caved during the holidays while visiting his parents.
He asked me straight up whether an aftermarket key would hold up the same as a dealer one. Fair question.
I showed him the blank I carry. Same TOY48 blade profile, same 4D-68 transponder chip, same three-button remote head layout matching his HYQ1512V. The housing has the same weight and button feel. Only difference is no Lexus logo stamped on the back. He turned it over in his hand a couple times like he was looking for the catch.
Cut the blade on site, then programmed the 4D-68 chip through the OBD-II port using the existing master key registration procedure. The IS300 immobilizer ECU accepts up to four transponder key IDs, so adding a second was quick. Tested the remote lock, unlock, and trunk. Tested the transponder start three times cold.
He clicked both keys side by side, feeling the buttons. Same travel, same click. He just nodded and said his wife would be happy.
The whole job took about twenty minutes and cost him a fraction of what the dealer wanted for their version of the same key.
