A guy in Casitas Springs called me on a Wednesday morning. He had a 2014 Lexus IS and one working fob. He was not in a crisis yet, but his backup fob had been sitting in a drawer for two years and he figured he should actually confirm it worked before the day he needed it.
He pulled it out, clicked it, nothing. The car did not respond at all. He swapped in a fresh CR1632 he bought that morning. Still nothing. That is when he searched and found me.
I got to him in Casitas Springs and popped the fob open on his hood. The battery he bought was correct, but the previous owner had clearly pried this one open the wrong way at some point. One of the battery contacts had a small outward bow on it, barely visible, but enough that the CR1632 was making contact on one side and floating on the other. The transponder circuit was getting just enough power to confuse the situation without enough to actually register.
I straightened the contact, seated a new CR1632 the right way, and snapped the housing back together. Then I walked every function: lock, unlock, the other two buttons, door handle touch unlock on both sides, and confirmed the dash was happy with the fob signal. Everything came back.
He asked me to go ahead and program the fob into the car properly since it had been dormant so long. Pulled out the diagnostic interface, confirmed it was already registered, and verified the fob ID was active in the system. No re-enrollment needed. The contact issue was the whole story.
He said the dealer had quoted him a new fob outright when he called to describe the symptoms. He did not need a new fob. He needed ten minutes and someone who looked at the hardware before assuming the worst.
