Got a call from a guy near Topa Topa Brewing Company in Oxnard. His 2012 Lexus IS 350 had one working smart key left, and the panic button on it had stopped responding weeks ago. Then the range started shrinking. By the time he called me, he was pressing the fob against the start button just to get the engine to turn over, using the backup detection loop on the dash.
He had already called the Lexus dealer. They wanted him to bring the car in, order the fob, and come back for a second appointment to program it. He said the wait was going to be over a week for the part alone.
I drove out same day. Popped the old fob open on his tailgate. The CR1632 was corroded on one terminal, and the battery contact on the board had a film of green on it. Cleaned that up and reseated a fresh cell. Panic button came back, range returned to normal from about 25 feet out.
Then I set him up with a spare HYQ14AAB so he wouldn't be a single-fob owner anymore. Registered it through the OBD port using the Smartbox Pro, confirmed the immobilizer accepted both keys, tested all four buttons on each fob, ran three clean start cycles, and checked the door handle touch sensors on both front doors.
He watched the whole thing from a chair with a beer from the brewery. Said he almost wished it had taken longer.
