I got a call from a woman over in the College area of Ventura, parked in a lot near her gym. Her 2026 Lexus NX was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash and she had been standing outside for twenty minutes trying to figure out what was going on.
She had already swapped the fob battery herself, which was the right instinct. Fresh CR2032, correct size. Problem was still there.
When I got to her, I asked to see the fob before I touched anything else. She handed it over and I could see right away that the replacement battery was slightly off-center in the tray. The contact tab on one side was not making full contact. This happens when the fob gets pried open with something flat and sharp instead of the right tool, and the tab gets a small bend. Looks fine at a glance. Is not fine electrically.
I reseated the battery correctly, dressed the contact tab, closed the fob up right, and walked every function. Lock, unlock, and both of the other buttons. Door handle proximity detection on the driver side. Start button response. All of it came back clean.
She looked at the dash for a second, then looked at me, then said she had already pulled up the dealer's booking page on her phone that morning. She closed the browser.
Job done on site, no tow, no appointment queue, way less than what the dealer would have charged just to look at it.
