Out in La Conchita, right along that narrow strip between the 101 and the bluffs, a guy called me about his 2020 Lexus NX sitting in a lot near the water. He'd had the car about eight months, bought it used, and had only ever been handed one fob at the sale. That fob was gone. Somewhere between the boat and the parking area, it had vanished, and he'd already burned half an hour retracing his steps in the heat.
He assumed it meant a tow. That's the first thing most people jump to when they're stuck with no key at all on a Lexus.
I was there that afternoon. Getting into the car without a working key on this generation means picking the door cylinder with the right tools and decoding the wafer positions so I can cut an accurate emergency blade. I did that on site, cut the blade to match, and confirmed it worked the cylinder clean before moving on.
From there it was the OBD port and the all-keys-lost procedure. On the 2020 NX, that process clears any previously registered fobs from the system's memory, which matters here because a lost fob sitting somewhere should not be able to start the car. Then the new fob gets registered fresh. The factory fob ID on his original was gone with the lost key, so I was building the whole key record from zero.
New fob programmed, emergency blade seated inside it, engine running in the same lot he'd been standing in when he called me. Total time was about 50 minutes. He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him way more, plus a tow, plus probably a couple of days waiting for parts. He just nodded and drove off toward the 101.
