Got a call from a driver stuck at a highway pulloff near Paradise Falls in Thousand Oaks. His 2018 Lexus NX emergency key blade had snapped clean inside the driver's door cylinder. Half the blade was wedged in the lock, the other half in his hand.

He had already called another locksmith who quoted him for a full cylinder replacement over the phone. New lock, new keys, the whole thing.

I drove out and used a TOY43R Lishi tool to slide along the broken fragment and pull it out without scoring the wafer surfaces. Once it was free, I decoded the lock right there from the wafer readings, cut a fresh TOY48 emergency blade to match, and programmed a new 128-bit AES Texas Instruments transponder through the OBD port. His HYQ14FBA fob and its remote functions were still fine. He only needed the physical blade and a new chip registration.

No drilling. No cylinder swap. His original lock works with the new key exactly like before. The whole thing took maybe 40 minutes.

He kept looking at the door handle like the lock was going to reject it. It didn't. Same lock, same car, just a new blade that actually fits because the readings were right.

The other locksmith's destructive route would have cost a good chunk more and left him with a mismatched cylinder. This way, his OEM hardware stayed intact.
