Out in Juanamaria, a guy had his only 2021 NX fob go dark sometime around midnight. The car was sitting in the driveway, push-button start, and it wasn't recognizing anything. He'd already looked up flatbed tow rates and was mentally preparing to wait until the dealer opened in the morning.

I asked him to try the fob-to-button trick first, holding the fob face directly against the start button. Car started. So the fob wasn't fully dead, but it wasn't being detected passively the way it should, which told me the battery was on its last legs or the key needed a fresh registration.
I drove out, swapped the CR2032 on the hood of my van, and tested range and passive detection. Passive entry came right back. But since he only had the one key, we went ahead and programmed a second fob as a spare while I was already there with the equipment connected. All-keys-lost on the 2021 NX runs through the OBD port with a proper smart key tool. The procedure has a timed sequence built in, and once the new fob is registered, any unregistered fob that was previously cloned or purchased online can't just be plugged in and paired without that same process.
He had two working keys by 1am. The dealer option would have meant a tow, a morning appointment, and a wait for parts if they didn't have the fob in stock.
The mobile call cost him a fraction of that. He seemed most surprised that the whole thing happened in his own driveway.
