2021 Lexus NX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got called out to Ventura Keys area for a 2021 NX that wouldn't recognize either smart key. Owner tried both fobs, changed batteries, nothing.
The dash kept throwing "Key Not Detected" even with the fob right on the start button. She'd already called the dealer. They wanted the car towed in, quoted her somewhere north of what she paid for her laptop, and said maybe Thursday.
I plugged into the OBD port under the dash. The 2021 NX runs the newer 8A transponder chip, not the older DST-AES like earlier models. Different protocol means different programming sequence. The Smart Pro showed both HYQ14FLB fobs in memory but neither would authenticate.
Here's what happened: recent phone update changed her NFC settings. Her phone in her purse was interfering with the smart key signal. We moved the phone to the back seat, cycled the system, and both fobs started working instantly. No programming needed.
Sometimes the fix is knowing what else can break the signal. These 8A systems are more sensitive to interference than the older chips. Phone NFC, wireless chargers, even some aftermarket dash cams can block the key signal.
She kept her money, kept her Thursday free, and learned to check phone placement when the car acts up.
