A GX470 owner was parked near Rose Shopping Center in Oxnard, loading groceries, when the remote buttons stopped doing anything. Lock, unlock, panic, all dead. The key still turned in the door and started the engine, so the 4D-67 transponder side was fine, but three buttons doing nothing made her think the whole key had failed.
She called the Lexus dealer. They told her the remote head key, part number 89070-33470, would need to be ordered. Could take a week, maybe more. Then she would need to bring the vehicle in for programming and cutting. She asked if she could just drive it in. They said yes, but the appointment was over a week out.
She found me online and called while she was still in the parking lot.
I got there in about 25 minutes. Popped the key shell open on her tailgate. The CR1616 was dead, and one of the battery clip legs had a slight bend, not making solid contact. New battery, straightened the clip, snapped it back together. Remote buttons came back right away. I tested lock, unlock, and panic from about 30 feet, then had her test the ignition cycle twice just to confirm the transponder side had not been affected.
The whole visit was maybe 20 minutes. She did not need a new key at all, just someone who could look at it and tell the difference between a dead remote and a dead transponder.
