A real estate agent called me around 8 in the morning from a lot near the Port Hueneme Historical Society Museum. She had a showing at 9, clients arriving, and her 2012 GX 460 was giving her the "Smart key malfunction" message on the dash. Push-to-start did nothing. I got there in about 25 minutes. Popped the fob open on her hood so she could see. The CR1632 was corroded on one side, barely making contact. But I also wanted to check whether the key had actually lost its registration, because these 89990-60172 immobilizer modules can drop a fob from memory if communication glitches stack up.
Connected through OBD, pulled the smart key data. Her fob was still registered but throwing a communication fault code. Fresh CR1632, cleaned the battery terminals inside the fob housing, cleared the fault through diagnostics. Then the part that matters: tested every button, both door handle touch sensors, the hatch release, and push-to-start from cold. All normal.
Hands-on time was about 20 minutes. She pulled out of that lot at 8:47.
She didn't need a new fob. The dealer would have wanted her to tow it in, wait a day or two, and probably walk out with a new key she didn't need for a price that would have stung. She paid a fraction of that and made her showing on time.
