2006 Lexus GX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Downtown Oxnard?

Most calls in and around Downtown Oxnard, I'm there within 30 minutes. When you call, I confirm the year, make, model, and key type so I have the right blank and equipment loaded before I leave. No stops, no guessing when I arrive. For context, Lexus dealers in the area regularly book key appointments a week or more out, and parts availability on older model years can push that further. I treat every call as same-day.

Q: Can I get a key made today?

Yes. I carry remote head key blanks and programming equipment for the 2006 GX on every call. Nothing gets ordered, nothing gets shipped, no appointment gets scheduled for next week. You call, I come to you, and you leave with a working key the same day.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2006 GX. Can I program it myself?

Not on this vehicle. The 2006 GX remote head key requires professional programming equipment to register with the immobilizer. There is no button sequence, no ignition-turn trick that works here. Some older Toyota and Lexus models from the late 1990s had onboard self-programming options, but the GX in this generation is not one of them. If you bought a fob online, that's fine, it can still work.

Q: My 2006 GX starts fine but the remote on the key head stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. The remote functions and the ignition system on a remote head key operate independently. If the car starts but the lock, unlock, and other buttons do nothing, start with the CR1616 battery. A dead or nearly dead cell kills the remote side while leaving the blade functions intact. Swap the battery, make sure it's seated flat with the positive side facing the right direction, and retest. That fixes it more often than people expect.

2006 Lexus GX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a homeowner inside a gated community in Downtown Oxnard. His 2006 GX was sitting in the driveway, wouldn't start, and the HOA had a strict vehicle access policy that blocked commercial trucks from coming through without advance approval. The tow company he called first couldn't get past the gate. So the car just sat there.

He found me because I drive a regular service van, not a flatbed. I followed a resident through the gate, parked behind his GX, and got to work.

The remote head key had stopped doing anything useful. No remote response, no reliable start. He had one working key left, which changed the whole picture. With a working key in hand, I didn't have to fight the security countdown. I programmed the new remote head key on-site, cut the blade to match, and tested every function in his driveway before I packed up.

He never needed a tow. The HOA never knew I was there for a service call. The car started on the first try with the new key and he went on with his day.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait and a price that made him hesitate long enough to look for another option. He was glad he did.

How long does a 2006 Lexus GX key replacement take?▼

Depends on whether you have a working key or not. If you have at least one working key, adding a spare is a relatively quick job once I'm connected and set up. The actual programming window is short, and most of the visit time is setup, cutting the blade, and testing everything properly. All-keys-lost is a different situation.
