2004 Lexus GX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the programming actually take once you're at my car?

If you have a working key and just need a spare added, the on-car portion is quick once we're connected. The part that takes time is if all keys are lost. The security system on this generation of Lexus runs a timed lockout sequence before it will accept new key registrations. That countdown runs around 15 to 20 minutes and can't be skipped.

Q: Can you get me a key faster than the dealer?

Yes, and by a significant margin. The in-bay programming at a dealer isn't what takes forever. It's everything around it: scheduling the appointment, parts availability, getting the car there. On a 2004 GX, dealers aren't always stocking blanks on the shelf. They may need to order the remote head key unit, which adds days or more to the timeline. We carry blanks and handle the cut and program in one mobile visit.

Q: My GX starts fine but the remote buttons do nothing. Is the fob dead or is something else going on?

First thing: check the battery. The CR1616 in these is a thin cell and it loses voltage before it loses all function, meaning the transponder side can still talk to the car while the remote side is already too weak to transmit a signal to the door locks. It reads as a dead remote but it's often just a low battery.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 GX. Can I program it myself?

Not on this one. There's no DIY button sequence or ignition-cycle trick that registers a new remote head key on this platform. Programming requires a tool connected to the OBD port. The factory FCC ID on the fob also has to match what your car's system is expecting, so if the one you bought online doesn't correspond to the correct unit for this vehicle, it won't pair regardless of who tries to program it.

2004 Lexus GX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in the Channel Islands Harbor area called on a Tuesday morning. Her 2004 GX had been sitting in the driveway for two days because she had one key and something had gone wrong with it. The remote portion had stopped responding completely, and she wasn't fully sure the ignition side was right either.

She mentioned, almost as a side note, that getting to the Lexus dealer wasn't something she could easily do. Her late husband had handled the car stuff. The dealer was a freeway drive she hadn't made in years, and she didn't have anyone to take her.

I told her I'd come to her.

When I got there, the key was the original remote head key, the kind where the blade folds in and the fob body is the grip. She'd replaced the battery herself, which was the right instinct, but the CR1616 she'd put in wasn't seated flat. That thin coin cell is easy to tilt slightly and lose contact without knowing it. I reseated it, cleaned the terminals, and tested the remote range walking the perimeter of her car. All three buttons working.

Then I connected through the OBD port to confirm the transponder was still paired correctly and to add a second key as a spare, because she'd been running on one key for who knows how long and that's just an accident waiting to happen.

She stood on her front step with her tea and watched the whole thing from maybe fifteen feet away. When I handed her the second key, she tested the lock button twice, then the unlock, then looked at me and said that was the first time she'd felt like the car was actually hers again.

Dealer would have meant a tow or a ride she didn't want to take, plus a wait, plus a bill she didn't need. She didn't have to leave home.

Lexus GX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my GX after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Lexus dealer service departments run limited hours, and if you lose your only key on a Friday evening, you're typically looking at Monday morning at the earliest before they can even look at the car. That assumes they have the right blank in stock, which for a 2004 GX isn't guaranteed since it's not a current model. We work nights and weekends because that's when people actually discover they have a key problem.
