The blade turns the ignition, and the transponder chip inside communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer each time you start the car. If the transponder isn't registered to your specific vehicle, the car will crank and immediately shut down or refuse to start altogether, even if the blade is cut perfectly. The cut and the programming are two different jobs that both have to be right.

Writing the repair order, getting a dispatcher, pulling the key from parts, locating a scan tool with a current subscription, and going through vehicle check-in all adds overhead to what is genuinely a short procedure. A job that takes me about 30 minutes in your driveway or parking garage becomes a half-day event at the dealer.

My 2005 GX starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. When the transponder still works and the car starts normally, but the lock and unlock buttons are dead, the remote side is its own separate issue from the ignition side. First thing to check is the battery. The remote head key on this vehicle takes a CR1616, which is a specific size. People often install a CR2032 thinking it's close enough, but it won't seat correctly and the contact won't be solid. Swap in the right CR1616, make sure the battery is flat against both contacts, and retest. If range is still short or buttons are still unresponsive after a confirmed correct battery, then it's worth looking at whether the fob needs to be re-paired.

I have one working key for my 2005 GX. Can I get a spare made without going to the dealer?

Yes, and this is one of the better situations to be in. With one working master key present, this generation has an onboard add-a-key procedure that doesn't require dealer-level equipment for the relearn step. I still cut and prepare the new key blade and transponder, but the registration sequence can be completed on site without a tow or a service appointment. Don't wait until you're down to zero keys to handle this. All-keys-lost is a longer job and costs more. One spare key made now is the smarter move.
