Down in the South Surfside area of Port Hueneme, a woman called me at about six in the evening. Her father had just finished with a specialist and she was getting him back into her 2016 Lexus GX when the fob quit. She pressed the start button. Nothing. Held the fob flat against the button for the backup detection. Still nothing. Her dad was in a wheelchair next to a car that would not move, and the dealer was closed for the day.
I got there and used the mechanical insert key to pop the driver door. Hooked my IM608 to the OBD port and pulled up the smart key system. Her HYQ14ACX was registered but the car was not seeing it at all. I cracked the fob open on the hood. The CR1632 had leaked just enough to leave a green film on the negative contact plate. The H-chip was not getting power, so nothing was transmitting.
New fob, fresh CR1632, programmed and registered through the diagnostic port. Walked every door handle for touch unlock and lock, tested all four buttons, ran the push-button start cycle twice.
From her phone call to her dad's engine running was under 50 minutes. She drove him home in his own seat, in his own car, without trying to fold a wheelchair into the back of an Uber.
