How Scion xA Keys Work
1st Generation (NCP61)
Your xA uses a standard transponder key with a Toyota 4D-67 (ID67) chip embedded in the plastic head. That chip talks to the Toyota TIS immobilizer system every time you turn the ignition, and if the chip is not registered to your car's ECU, the engine will not start. The key blade is a TOY43 profile, nothing high-security or laser cut, which keeps replacement costs low. If you have a separate remote fob for keyless entry, that is a different piece entirely and gets programmed through a simple door-cycle method.
Which Key Does Your xA Use?
A standard metal key with a plastic head that contains a tiny transponder chip. No buttons on the key itself. If your xA has keyless entry, the remote is a separate black fob you carry on your keychain.

Common Scion xA Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
First check on a no-start xA is the transponder chip in the head. The 4D-67 (ID67) chips in 2004-2006 models are 18+ years old; internals delaminate from age and heat. Key turns fine, engine cranks and dies because the chip signal is wrong. We test on-site.
Immobilizer Antenna Ring Wear
Owners blame the key when the culprit is the antenna ring. The small coil reads your transponder; on 2005-2006 xA models the wiring cracks or corrodes. Symptom mirrors a dead chip: key turns, cranks, no start. We diagnose on-site in Oxnard or Camarillo first.
Key Blade Wear
Your xA key feels loose in the door or the ignition sticks. On high-mileage xAs the TOY43 blade wears and the cuts lose depth. Works in the ignition but not the door, or vice versa. We cut a fresh blade to factory spec from your VIN.
Can You Program a Scion xA Key Yourself?
You can program the keyless entry remote yourself using a door-cycle method if you have at least one working remote. The transponder key itself requires professional OBD-II equipment to register the chip to your ECU, so that part is on us.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but your Scion xA shares its key system directly with the Toyota ist, a compact hatchback sold exclusively in Japan. Toyota built both cars on the same NCP61 platform, so OEM Toyota ist keys are fully compatible with your xA. The ist was a hit in Japanese cities for the same reasons the xA found fans here: small footprint, reliable drivetrain, and surprisingly good interior space for its size.
