How the xB Key System Changed Over the Years
First Generation (XP30)
Scion kept things simple here with a basic transponder key. Your key has a Toyota 4C (ID4C) chip embedded in the head, and there is no remote built in. The car reads that chip through the ignition antenna every time you turn the key, and if it does not match, the engine will not start.
Second Generation (E150)
Scion stepped things up here with a remote head key, combining your door cylinder buttons and transponder chip into one unit. The chip upgraded to an Toyota 4D-67 (ID67), which is a much more advanced encryption system. Programming now requires OBD-II diagnostic access through the Toyota TIS immobilizer, so this is no longer a simple on-board procedure.
Release Series (E150)
The Release Series models got special paint and interior trim, but under the hood the key system is identical to the standard second gen. Same Toyota 4D-67 (ID67) chip, same remote head fob, same OBD-II programming. Cosmetic upgrade only.
Third Generation (E160)
Toyota upgraded the immobilizer to NATS Type 6 for the final xB years. Your key still uses the Toyota 4D-67 (ID67) chip and a remote head design, but the FCC ID is MOZB52TH. PIN verification got tighter on these, which means programming takes a bit more work on the diagnostic side.
Which Key Does Your xB Use?
A plain metal key with a chip hidden inside the plastic head. No buttons, no battery. It just starts the car and unlocks the door manually.
Your lock, unlock, and trunk buttons are built right into the key head. The transponder chip and remote are all one piece, so you only carry one thing.
Identical to the standard second gen remote head key. Same three buttons, same CR2032 battery, same chip. The Release Series badge does not change the key.
Looks very similar to the 2007-2012 key but uses an updated FCC ID and pairs with the newer NATS Type 6 immobilizer. Three buttons, CR2032 battery, standard blade.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing, all done at your location.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Your insurance company does not care who made the key, just that it works and you have a receipt.
Common Scion xB Key Problems
Transponder Failure
The Toyota 4C (ID4C) chip in your 2004-2006 xB degrades, especially on a beat-up key. Chip signal weakens, the ignition antenna cannot read it, and the engine will not crank though the key turns. We test on-site and cut and program a replacement in Oxnard.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
2007-2015 xB fob keeps killing CR2032 batteries faster than it should. The immobilizer polling circuit in these remote heads draws power constantly. Swap the cell first; if it dies again in weeks the fob internals need replacing.
Key Programming Lockout
A failed programming attempt is a big deal. On 2007-2012 xBs a botched try can lock the ECU, blocking new keys until an EEPROM clear. Common after DIY or shops without proper Toyota tools. We carry the equipment to reset and start fresh.
Immobilizer Antenna Ring Failure
We check the antenna ring first on 2013-2015 xBs that suddenly will not start. The small coil around the ignition reads the transponder; when it fails, a good key is invisible to the car. Looks like a dead key but the key is fine. We test the ring on-site.
Can You Program a Scion xB Key Yourself?
You can program the remote (keyless entry) functions yourself using a door and ignition cycling procedure. But the transponder chip that actually starts the car requires professional diagnostic equipment. The remote is DIY; the chip is not.
Same deal here. The remote lock and unlock buttons can be programmed with an on-board add mode procedure. Transponder programming requires OBD-II access through Toyota-compatible tools, so that part needs a locksmith.
Identical to the standard second gen. Remote functions are DIY with the on-board procedure, but the Toyota G chip transponder needs professional OBD-II programming.
Remote buttons can be self-programmed using the same Toyota add mode procedure. The transponder chip requires OBD-II programming with PIN verification through the NATS Type 6 system. Call us for that part.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the 2004-2006 Scion xB shared its key system directly with the Toyota Echo. The key blanks are cross-compatible between the two vehicles, which means a Toyota Echo transponder blank works perfectly in your first gen xB. Scion was just Toyota in a younger wrapper, right down to the ignition.
