2010 Scion XB Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over near Mission Oaks Park in Camarillo, a mom called me around 8pm. Her toddler had spiked a fever and they were leaving the after-hours pediatric urgent care. The 2010 Scion XB would not start. Key turned, engine cranked, then nothing. The security indicator on the dash was blinking steadily, which on these is the immobilizer rejecting the transponder signal.
The Toyota dealer was closed. The pharmacy with her kid's medication closed at 9.
I got there and connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port. Her remote head key, the HYQ12BBY with the 4D-67 chip inside, looked fine from the outside. But when I pulled the key apart on the hood, the transponder chip had a hairline crack from impact damage. The chip housing was fractured just enough that it could not transmit to the antenna coil around the ignition cylinder. The immobilizer box was reading nothing, so it killed the fuel injectors every time.
I cut a new TOY43 blade, seated a fresh 4D-67 chip, and registered it through the diagnostic port. Read the 93C56 EEPROM, wrote the new key data, and the immobilizer accepted it first try. Fresh CR2016 in the remote side, tested all three buttons, confirmed lock, unlock, and panic range from 30 feet out.
From her call to engine running was 42 minutes. She picked up the medication before the pharmacy closed and had her kid home before 10. When a parent has a sick toddler in a car seat next to a dead car in a parking lot after dark, the only thing that matters is minutes until the engine turns over.
