It was around 8pm on a weeknight. A mom had just left an after-hours pediatric urgent care off somewhere near Camarillo and her XB would not start. Key turning, engine cranking, nothing catching. Her kid had a fever and there was a prescription waiting at a pharmacy that closed at 9.
She called me.
When I got to the lot, the first thing I did was connect my diagnostic tool to the OBD port. The remote head key on this XB is a single unit: cut blade, transponder, and remote all in one fob. What I found was that the transponder inside the fob had taken enough impact damage over time that it was no longer communicating with the vehicle's immobilizer. The key would turn. The engine would crank. But the car would not release fuel and ignition because it was not seeing a valid signal.
I replaced the fob with a correct-fit unit, cut the blade to her vehicle, and programmed the new key through the OBD port. The immobilizer accepted it on the first try.
From her phone call to the engine running was 42 minutes. She made it to the pharmacy. She got her kid home before 10.
I have done a lot of jobs in parking lots. That one I remember.
