How the Scion iQ Key System Evolved
1st Generation (AG10)
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a Toyota 4D-G (4D72) transponder chip inside the head that talks to your car's immobilizer every time you start it. Without that chip handshake, the engine will not fire. It is a 3-button remote head key with a CR2032 battery, and we program it through the OBD-II port right in your driveway.
1st Generation (AG10) Mid-cycle
You turn this key in the ignition just like the earlier years, and under the hood nothing changed for the key system. Same Toyota 4D-G (4D72) chip, same 3-button remote head key, same CR2032 battery. Toyota made minor electronics updates, but the on-board programming method stayed identical, which means our Autel IM608 handles it the same way.
1st Generation EV Variant (AG10E)
You turn this key the same way as the gas model, and the key itself is identical: Toyota 4D-G (4D72) chip, 3-button remote head, CR2032 battery. The only difference is under the hood. We verify ECU compatibility before programming the EV variant, but the process is the same on-board procedure.
1st Generation (AG10) Final
You turn this key knowing it is the last year Scion made the iQ. The key system stayed unchanged: Toyota 4D-G (4D72) transponder, 3-button remote head, CR2032 battery. On-board programming through the OBD-II port, no dealer appointment needed. Same straightforward job we have been doing since the 2012s rolled off the lot.
Which Key Does Your Scion iQ Use?
This is a single piece: the metal blade and the remote buttons are built into one key. The transponder chip lives inside the plastic head, and the blade slides right into your ignition. No push-button start on any iQ.
Scion iQ Key Replacement Pricing
Price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and remote function setup, all done on-site at your location.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
When your key stops working at 9 PM in Oxnard, the dealer is closed. We are not.
Common Scion iQ Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
iQ cranks but will not start even with a fresh fob battery. The Texas 4D chip in the head degrades; once it stops talking to the immobilizer, the engine locks out. We test the chip signal on-site and program a new key if it is dead. Common across 2012-2015.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Fob keeps eating CR2032 batteries every few weeks. Usual culprit: poor contact inside the battery compartment, not a defective remote. We check contacts and seat first. A cleaning or a new shell often solves it for a fraction of replacement cost.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Loss
A dead car battery or jump start knocks the ECU out of sync with your keys. The immobilizer recognizes none of them and the car will not start. We re-register your existing keys via OBD-II. Common iQ call in Simi Valley and Camarillo.
Blade Wear on Ignition
First check on a 2014 or 2015 iQ with start trouble: the blade. Daily use wears the cuts; a worn blade makes the cylinder sticky or refuse to turn. Before you replace the whole ignition, let us compare to original. A fresh key cut to code often fixes it.
Can You Program a Scion iQ Key Yourself?
If you already have one working master key, there is a manual add-key procedure that programs the transponder chip using a specific sequence of key insertions and door open/close cycles. However, this only programs the transponder for starting the car. It does not program the remote lock/unlock buttons. For full remote programming, or if you have lost all keys, you need professional OBD-II tools. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we handle both the transponder and the remote in one visit.

Did You Know?
The Scion iQ shares its key system directly with the Toyota iQ, which was rebadged as the Aston Martin Cygnet for luxury buyers. Same key, same immobilizer, wildly different price tag. A $40,000 Aston Martin that starts with the same key as your Scion. That might be the best automotive trivia at any dinner party.
