2013 Scion IQ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know if a replacement fob I found online will work with my 2013 Scion iQ?

Check the factory FCC ID printed on the back of your existing fob and match it exactly to whatever you're looking at buying. If those don't match, the remote won't work with your vehicle's receiver. Finding the right shell is only half the job anyway. The fob still needs to be programmed to your car before the lock and unlock buttons do anything.

Q: Do I need to bring my 2013 Scion iQ somewhere to get a replacement key made?

No. I come to you. The J Street Corridor, a parking lot, your driveway. The mobile unit carries the cutting machine and the programming equipment. Cutting the blade and enrolling the transponder both happen on site. No tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting room.

Q: I only have one key for my iQ. Is it harder to replace if I lose that last one?

Yes, meaningfully harder. When you still have a working key, adding a second one is a standard job. The existing key stays enrolled, you add the new one alongside it, and everything moves quickly. All-keys-lost is a different situation. With no working key present, the process requires a full immobilizer reset through the diagnostic port to clear the stored key data and re-enroll from scratch.

Q: My iQ starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons on my key stopped working. What's going on?

Almost always the CR2016. The remote receiver and the transponder in the key run independently, so a battery that's too weak to power the remote signal still has enough juice to tell the immobilizer the key is valid. Car starts, buttons do nothing. Swap the battery, seat it flat, make sure the contacts aren't bent.

2013 Scion IQ Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in the J Street Corridor picked up a 2013 Scion iQ off OfferUp. Clean title, ran well, one key. The seller told him getting a spare would be no big deal since it was just a small Scion. The dealer told him a different story.

They quoted him a number that made him pause long enough to start Googling. He found me and sent a message asking if the dealer price was real. I told him it was real for a dealer, but a mobile locksmith who carries the right Toyota-platform tooling does the same job for a fraction of what they wanted.

We set up at his place near J Street. The iQ is a tight little car and the key is a compact remote head unit, the whole thing is smaller than most fobs I handle. I cut the replacement blade on my machine, verified the cut, then went through the transponder enrollment and synced the remote through the OBD port. One visit, both done.

He held up the two keys like he was comparing them. Said he didn't expect it to move that fast. I told him the faster part was that he now had a spare, which changes the math on any future key situation completely. Losing your only key on a vehicle like this is a different job than adding a second one. He got out ahead of it.

The dealer comparison was an afterthought by the time I was packing up.

Scion IQ Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 2013 Scion iQ remote head key take?▼

CR2016. It is a thin coin cell, thinner than the CR2032 that most people are used to, so double-check before you grab one off the shelf. Available at any drugstore or hardware store. When we make a replacement key, a fresh CR2016 goes in before we hand it over.
