Got a call from a guy over in South Surfside, one of those three-story apartment buildings right off the water. He had a 2012 Scion IQ, one key left, and the head was already showing a hairline crack where the blade meets the plastic. He was not locked out yet. He just knew he was close.
He had already called the dealer. The number they gave him landed somewhere he was not expecting. He told me he assumed that was just the going rate now and had basically accepted it. I told him it was not.
I pulled up to his building, verified ownership, and got to work. The IQ is a small car, and finding a comfortable spot to decode the door lock without blocking the walkway took a second of maneuvering, but that is part of working mobile. I decoded the lock to get the cut data, then cut the blade on site. Programming the transponder through the OBD port followed, and the whole job ran about 25 to 30 minutes.
He tested the key himself, turned it over in his hand, and said something about how the original was already worse-looking than the new one. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted, and his car never left the parking lot.
The cracked key was still technically working when I left. Now it is a backup.
