How the FR-S Key System Works
Early ZN6 Transponder Key
A standard transponder key with a Texas 4D-67 G chip (80-bit) embedded in the head. No buttons, no remote, just a metal blade with a chip that talks to your Toyota T13 immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. On-board programming keeps things straightforward for us, which keeps costs down for you.
Mid-Run, Same System
A transponder key identical to the earlier years. Same Texas 4D-67 G chip (80-bit), same T13 immobilizer, same on-board programming method. Scion did not change the key system here, so if you have a 2015, the process is the same as a 2013 or 2014.
Final Year of Scion
A transponder key with the Texas 4D-67 G chip (80-bit), unchanged from prior years. This was the last model year before Scion was retired and the car became the Toyota 86. The immobilizer is still the Toyota T13 system, and on-board programming still works.
Optional Remote Head Key
A remote head key with three buttons, a CR2032 battery, and the same Texas 4D-67 G chip (80-bit) inside. This version combines your lock/unlock/trunk remote with the transponder key in one unit. Programming requires OBD-II access, which means we plug into your car's diagnostic port and handle everything from the driver's seat.
Which Key Does Your FR-S Use?
A plain metal key with a chip inside the plastic head. No remote buttons. You turn it in the ignition and the chip communicates with your car's immobilizer to allow the engine to start.
Looks like a regular key but has lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built into the head. Uses a CR2032 battery for the remote functions and a transponder chip for starting the engine.

Common FR-S Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
Key turns, engine cranks and dies, or the security light stays on. The Texas 4D chip in the FR-S key head has failed, common on keys baked in California heat. We cut and program a new transponder key on-site, usually in under 30 minutes.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Loss
Almost always a dead battery or jump start. When the FR-S loses power, the ECU loses transponder sync and a good key will not start the car. We plug into OBD-II and run a relearn to get key and ECU talking again.
Worn Ignition Cylinder
First thing we check is the ignition cylinder. On 2014-2016 FR-S models, spirited driving and daily use wear the wafers faster than expected. Hard turn or sticking key? The cylinder needs a rebuild or swap before a new key will work properly.
Key Blade Breakage
FR-S owners blame a snapped blade on a defect. Reality: the standard blade is thinner than most, and unlocking the door manually stresses the metal over time. If it broke in the cylinder we extract the piece and cut a fresh key in Oxnard or Simi Valley.
Can You Program an FR-S Key Yourself?
There is no DIY self-programming procedure for the Scion FR-S. Every key, whether transponder or remote head, requires OBD programming with professional locksmith equipment like the Autel IM608 or Xhorse VVDI. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we handle it on-site.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the Scion FR-S shares its key system and platform with the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86. All three cars use the same transponder chips and key blade profiles, which means locksmiths can cross-reference tools and programming procedures across all three brands. Same car, three badges, one key system.
