Got a call from a guy in Oxnard, over in the Gonzales Road commercial area, right as the shops were closing down for the night. His only key for his 2014 FR-S was gone. Checked pockets, retraced his steps through two stores, nothing. The parking lot was emptying out and he had no way to move the car.
I walked him through it on the phone before I left. Told him to look through the windshield at the base of the glass, driver's side, and read me the VIN. Then I had him pull up his insurance app for the registration. With the VIN I confirmed his key type, HYQ12BBY with the 4D67 chip, and had the right blank prepped before I even started driving.
He calmed down once he knew someone was actually coming.
On site, I connected through the Toyota 4-pin diagnostic port under the dash, ran the all-keys-lost reset on the immobilizer, generated a fresh 4D67 transponder, and cut the blade to code. Programmed and tested under the parking lot lights. Turn, crank, start. Security light went solid and stayed off.
He drove out before the lot went dark. The whole thing took about 35 minutes. A dealer would have needed a tow first, then an appointment days out, and the bill would have been a lot heavier. The VIN is the single most useful thing you can give me. Text it before I arrive.
