I got a call from a guy stranded near Rose Park, over in Oxnard, on a Sunday afternoon. He was driving his 2016 Scion FR-S and the blade snapped clean in the ignition -- half still in the cylinder, half in his hand. He'd already called one other locksmith before me. That shop quoted him a full ignition replacement over the phone without even seeing the car. New cylinder, new keys, the whole job. He didn't love that answer, so he kept looking and found me.
When I pulled up, I could see the broken piece sitting just inside the cylinder face. The FR-S uses a fairly standard ignition cylinder for the era -- not exotic, not anything that demands destruction to access. I got the fragment out with an extraction tool, working carefully around the wafer surfaces so nothing inside got scratched or displaced. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock right there, cut a new blade to match, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port so the immobilizer would recognize the new key.
The new blade turned the ignition on the first try. The cylinder he drove in with is the same one he drove away with.
He mentioned the dealer estimate later, almost as an aside. Whatever they were going to charge him, it was a lot more than what he paid me, and it would have meant waiting for parts and a shop appointment. He was back on the road the same afternoon, which is the only thing he actually cared about.
