How the xD Key System Changed Over the Years
Early NCP61
A remote head key with a Texas 4D transponder chip and three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. Your xD uses Toyota TIS immobilizer, which means the car checks the chip in your key every time you turn the ignition. On-board programming is possible with the right tools, so we handle it right in your driveway without any dealer involvement.
Mid-Cycle Refresh
A remote head key with the same Texas 4D chip and three-button layout. Toyota updated some electronics under the hood, but the key system stayed consistent. The immobilizer still requires ECU registration for any new key, which we do through on-board programming at your location.
Late Production
A remote head key that looks identical to earlier years, still running a Texas 4D transponder chip. The difference is under the surface: Toyota tightened security, so these require OBD-II programming through the diagnostic port. We use Autel IM608 or Xhorse VVDI to handle it, and the whole process takes about 20 to 35 minutes in your driveway.
Which Key Does Your xD Use?
A traditional key with a built-in remote and a Texas 4D transponder chip inside the head. You turn it in the ignition to start, and the remote handles locks and trunk.
Same style as the earlier years. Three-button remote head key with a Texas 4D chip that communicates with your immobilizer every time you start the car.
Looks and feels the same as earlier xD keys, but the programming method changed. These need OBD-II access for the transponder to register with the ECU.
The Real Cost of a Scion xD Key

Common Scion xD Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
Key turns, engine cranks, will not fire, security light steady or blinking. Heat degrades the Texas 4D transponder in the head; once it stops talking to the immobilizer the ECU kills fuel. Constant on 2010-2014 cars in Oxnard or Camarillo sun.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Usually a tiny internal short or an LED drawing power. Lock/unlock quits or works one day, not the next. Good news: the car still starts because the transponder chip needs no battery. Fresh CR2032; if it comes back, the board needs replacing.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Loss
First check on a Simi Valley xD that won't start after a battery swap: immobilizer sync. When the battery dies, the ECU loses handshake with the transponder. Fix is re-registration via OBD-II, 15 minutes. No new key needed.
Worn Ignition Cylinder
Owners blame the key when the problem is the cylinder. High-mileage 2008-2012 xDs develop sticky cylinders from blade wear. The key catches. We test with a known-good key first; replacing a key you do not need wastes money. Cylinder fix on-site.
Can You Program a Scion xD Key Yourself?
If you have a working master key, you can add a new transponder key using a door and ignition sequence. The timing is critical, and you need the correct 4D-67 chip blank, but it is doable at home without any special tools.
Same master key procedure as the earlier years. Insert the master key five times, cycle the door six times, then insert the new key. If the security light goes solid, you are in programming mode. Timing matters, so do not rush it.
The on-board procedure still works for adding a key if you have a master. However, if all keys are lost, you need OBD-II programming with professional tools like Techstream or Autel IM608. That is where we come in.

Did You Know?
Back in 2008, Scion built the xD on Toyota's NCP61 platform, the same one used for the Toyota Ist and related Auris models sold overseas. Because of that shared DNA, the xD's key system uses cross-compatible Toyota transponder keys with Texas 4D chips. If you ever wondered why your Scion key looks exactly like a Toyota key, now you know.
