2014 Scion XD
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know if a replacement fob I found online will actually work on my 2014 Scion xD?

Flip the fob over and look for the factory FCC ID printed on the label. That identifier ties the wireless transmitter to the correct frequency and signal format for your vehicle. If the aftermarket fob you found matches the factory FCC ID on the original, it is the right unit. If it does not match, the remote functions will not pair correctly even if the key blade looks identical. Buying the right fob shell is only half the job.

Q: Are you licensed and insured to do this work in California?

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, fully insured, and bonded. We are also BBB A+ rated and enrolled in Google's Guaranteed program. You can look all of that up before you call.

Q: I have a working key but the remote buttons stopped responding. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the 2014 xD remote head key, the transponder that starts the car and the remote that handles lock and unlock are in the same unit, but they can fail independently. If the car starts fine but the remote buttons are dead, start with the CR2016. A low battery on this fob can kill the remote signal entirely while the car still starts, because the ignition side draws from the vehicle's own field, not the fob battery.

Q: Can I program a second key for my 2014 Scion xD myself without special equipment?

No. The remote head key on this vehicle requires professional diagnostic equipment to program. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that registers a new key on this system. If you bought a blank online, you still need someone with the right tools to pair it to your car. The blade also needs to be cut to your vehicle, either from the key code tied to your VIN or by decoding your existing key.

2014 Scion XD Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was heading through Wood Ranch in Simi Valley on another call when a message came in. Owner of a 2014 Scion xD, needed a spare cut and programmed before a road trip the next morning. She had already texted me the VIN, which I genuinely appreciate. Not everyone does that.

By the time I found parking, I already knew what I was walking up to. She had a working key with her, which is the best possible version of this job. I confirmed the fob type visually, cross-checked the factory FCC ID printed on the back, and pulled the correct blank from the van.

She watched the whole thing, which I actually prefer. People relax when they can see the work being done and ask questions as they come up.

With a working key in hand, the job was clean. I programmed the new remote head key, cut the blade to the vehicle, swapped in a fresh CR2016, and walked through every button with her before I put my tools away. Lock, unlock, and the third button, all confirmed. Then I had her start the car herself.

Fourteen minutes from parking to her holding a tested spare. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days and a price that made her laugh out loud. That came up almost as an afterthought. The part she cared about was being back on schedule for her trip.

What battery does the 2014 Scion xD key fob use?▼

It takes a CR2016. That is thinner than the more common CR2032, so double-check the number before you buy one. Most drugstores and big-box stores carry it, but it sometimes gets misfiled on the shelf next to the CR2032. When I do a replacement, I install a fresh CR2016 and test signal range before the job is done.
