2012 Scion XD
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last?

Years, if it's done right. The programming doesn't expire or degrade. What actually fails over time is the rubber on the button pads or the battery. On the 2012 xD the factory battery is a CR2016, and when it gets low the remote functions go soft before anything else shows a problem. Swap it on schedule and the key itself should outlast the car.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me directly. Every key I make is covered. That said, if a correctly programmed key starts acting up weeks later, the cause is almost always the vehicle side or the battery, not the key itself. A low CR2016 is the first thing I check. After that I'm looking at whether the immobilizer threw a code or if there's an antenna ring issue. I troubleshoot the actual cause rather than just handing you another key and calling it done.

Q: My xD starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Is the key dead?

Not necessarily. On the 2012 xD, the remote functions and the ignition transponder are doing two different jobs. If the car starts, the transponder side is alive. Dead remote functions usually point to one of three things: a low or failed CR2016, a cracked solder joint inside the fob from being dropped, or a damaged button pad that's lost contact. Pop the case, check the battery first.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or does it have to be your blank?

Bring it. As long as it matches the factory FCC ID listed on the original fob and carries the correct transponder chip inside, I can program it. The catch is that not every fob sold online as a "fit" for the 2012 xD actually matches. Some ship with the wrong chip, wrong frequency, or a blade cut to the wrong profile. I'll verify it before I do anything. If it checks out, you pay for labor only.

2012 Scion XD Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A temp worker called me at 7:30 in the morning. She was parked at a staffing office out in Simi Valley, waiting on her assignment, and her remote head key had cracked apart sometime that morning.

The blade had worked loose from the head and she couldn't get consistent contact in the ignition. She needed to be rolling by 8:30 to make the job site or risk losing the placement entirely.

I was pulling into the lot in about 20 minutes.

The blade itself was fine once I decoded the cut and confirmed the profile. Built her a new remote head using a verified blank matching the factory FCC ID on the fob, programmed it through the OBD port, and walked the buttons before handing it over. Lock, unlock, the third button, and a couple of ignition cycles to confirm the immobilizer accepted the new key cleanly. Hands-on time was around 20 minutes.

She made the job site with time to spare. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill that dwarfed what she paid me. She didn't have any of those to spare that morning.

Scion XD Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys?▼

We use OEM-spec blanks matched to the factory FCC ID on the fob for your 2012 Scion xD. The transponder chip inside has to match what the immobilizer expects, and the blade profile has to be right for the ignition cylinder. Starting with a verified blank keeps compatibility surprises out of the equation. If a blank doesn't test clean before I program it, it doesn't go in your hand.
