2009 Scion XD Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
It was about 8 in the evening when she called from the parking lot of a pediatric urgent care in Simi Valley. Her toddler had a fever and a prescription waiting at a pharmacy that closed at nine. Her 2009 Scion xD was turning over but not starting.
She had the original key. It looked fine. The remote still clicked.
I got there inside of twenty minutes. While she sat with her kid in the back, I pulled the key head apart right there in the lot. The transponder inside had cracked, probably from a hard drop at some point. The remote portion still had juice, which is why she had no warning before this moment. But the ignition was not getting a valid signal, and the engine was not going to run.
I connected to the OBD port, replaced the key with a verified blank matched to her vehicle, programmed the new unit, and turned the ignition. It started on the first attempt.
From her call to the engine running was 42 minutes. She made it to the pharmacy before it closed and had her kid home well before ten.
The Toyota dealer was closed. Even if they weren't, a key order and a morning appointment would have been the answer. That's not a criticism, that's just how dealership parts and service scheduling works. It wasn't the right tool for that night.
