A couple came out of a spot near Big Sky on a Friday night and their Scion XD just sat there. No lock response, no unlock, nothing. The key turned and the car started fine, so they knew it was the remote side, not the ignition. They swapped a battery at the convenience store across the way. Still nothing. That is when they searched for a locksmith and called me.
I was about 12 minutes out. When I pulled up, I already had their remote head key stocked, CR2016 cells in the drawer, and my programmer ready. The factory fob uses a three-button setup on a single unit, and on these the remote receiver in the car sometimes needs the fob re-registered after a battery dies completely, especially if it sat dead for a while. I tested the existing key first, confirmed the transmitter was not responding, and went through the programming sequence with my key tool. The fob locked and unlocked on the first cycle after that.
I walked both buttons a few times, checked the range from across the lot, and they were done. Drove home that same Friday night instead of leaving their car in a lot all weekend and dealing with a dealer appointment Monday morning.
That is the thing about stocking parts and being mobile. A 10pm call does not run any differently than a 10am one.
