2011 Scion XD
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know I'm getting the right replacement fob for my 2011 Scion xD?

The factory FCC ID on the fob is printed on the back label. That's the identifier I use to confirm the replacement unit matches your vehicle's transmitter spec before I program anything. Getting the wrong fob and programming it anyway is how you end up with a key that starts the car but a remote that does nothing. I verify the fob before the job starts, not after something goes wrong.

Q: Are you licensed and insured to do this work in California?

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, fully insured, and bonded. We're also BBB A+ rated and part of Google's Guaranteed program, which you can verify directly. California takes automotive locksmith licensing seriously, and so do we. You can look up the license before you ever call.

Q: I bought a replacement remote head key online. Can I program it myself?

Not on this one. The 2011 xD remote head key requires a tool connected to the OBD port to register a new key to the immobilizer. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works on this system. The remote portion and the transponder are both in the same unit, and both sides need to be properly paired. If you bought the key online, that's fine. You still need someone with the right equipment to complete the job.

Q: My xD starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Is the key dead?

Start with the CR2016. That's the most common reason the remote side quits while the car still starts, since the transponder and the remote transmitter run independently of each other. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the transmitter itself may have failed, or the contacts inside the fob took some damage. On a remote head key, you can't just replace the fob shell and call it done. The replacement unit needs to be programmed.

2011 Scion XD Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a Meineke shop over in Simi Valley. A customer had brought his xD in for brakes, and while it was there, he asked the shop to help him get a replacement key made.

They called out a locksmith. That locksmith hit an immobilizer fault partway through the programming attempt and walked. Told the shop the ECU was likely bad and the car needed to go to the dealer. The car wouldn't start. The shop was now holding a vehicle they couldn't move.

They called me.

When I got there, the car had been sitting in the bay a couple hours. I pulled the story out of the service writer: incomplete key registration attempt, no clean exit from the process, and the immobilizer had locked up. The fault wasn't catastrophic. It was a messy exit from an interrupted procedure that left the security system rejecting everything.

I brought my bench programmer in. Pulled the ECU, read the memory directly, cleared the fault at the source, and wrote it back clean. From there I registered a fresh remote head key from scratch. Three buttons, factory spec. First clean attempt after the reset went through without a fight.

Then I put the ECU back, verified start, tested all three buttons, and walked the Meineke guys through what they were looking at. They hadn't seen a bench-level fix done on site before. I explained what the interrupted attempt had done and why the right move wasn't a flatbed to the Toyota dealer for a multi-day wait.

Total time was about 75 minutes from the moment I touched the car. The shop was relieved. The customer got his car back the same afternoon.

I carry bench tools for exactly this scenario. Sometimes the wall you hit isn't the car being broken. It's the previous approach leaving things worse than they found them.

What battery does the 2011 Scion xD remote head key use?▼

CR2016. It's a slim coin cell, thinner than the more common CR2032, so don't swap in the wrong size or you'll get a bad contact fit. These are easy to find at any drugstore or hardware store. When I'm on a job, I swap in a fresh one and walk through all three buttons at range before I call it done.
