2016 Scion IA
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to getting a spare made?

More. When you have a working key in hand, adding a spare is a programming job. When every key is gone, the immobilizer needs a full reset and new keys have to be enrolled from zero. That process takes longer and costs more, and on the iA it requires professional diagnostic equipment either way. The gap between "spare while I still have one" and "all-keys-lost reset" can be significant. Get the spare made now.

Q: Do aftermarket replacement fobs actually work on the 2016 Scion iA?

Hit or miss. The iA's key system is Mazda-sourced, and some aftermarket fobs are spec'd for the Mazda side of that relationship, some aren't. Shell quality varies a lot too. I've seen aftermarket housings where the battery contact is slightly off position, which causes intermittent failures that look like a security problem but are just a sloppy part. I use OEM-spec fobs verified for this vehicle, tested on site before I leave. You're not paying for a guess.

Q: My iA shows a key warning on the dash even with a fresh battery. What's actually going on?

A few things can cause this, and a new battery doesn't rule them out. First, confirm it's a CR2025 and not a CR2032. They look similar, the CR2032 is thicker, and if someone pressed it in anyway it can bow the contact plate and give you intermittent reads even after you swap back to the right cell. Reseat the correct battery and check that both contact plates are flat and making clean contact.

Q: The Scion brand is gone. Can I still get a working replacement key for my iA?

Yes, and the Mazda connection actually helps here. The iA's key system carries over from the Mazda platform it was built on, so compatible fob hardware is not as scarce as you might expect for a discontinued nameplate. The factory fob ID and the dealer part number are still in circulation. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment handles this the same way any current Mazda-based key job gets handled.

2016 Scion IA Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Oxnard, over in the Historic District, a woman called me about her 2016 Scion iA. She had bought it used a couple years back and got exactly one key with it. She kept meaning to get a spare cut. Then the fob shell cracked, and before she could do anything about it, the blade snapped off inside her door lock while she was trying to get in one morning.

She was holding the remote housing in one hand and had a broken blade tip sitting in her lock cylinder.

First thing I did was extract the blade from the lock. Then I looked at the fob. The shell was gone but the internal components were intact, which matters because the transponder data and the pairing were still good. I could work with that instead of starting a full reset from scratch. I decoded the lock, cut two new blades to match, and rebuilt everything into new shells. She went from zero working keys to two.

The whole job ran under an hour on site. She had been quoted a wait time of several days at a dealer, plus the parts situation for a discontinued brand like Scion is not always predictable. She saved a good chunk and didn't have to arrange a tow or a rental.

If your fob shell is cracked or the blade is bent, don't wait until it breaks the rest of the way. The broken-key version of this job is still manageable. The lost-everything version is a longer process.

Scion IA Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2016 Scion iA key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. The dealer route on a Scion iA smart key means ordering parts, waiting on availability for a discontinued brand, and paying dealer labor rates on top of that. A mobile locksmith comes to you in the Historic District, handles the cutting and programming on site, and the total is a fraction of what the dealer wanted. No towing, no separate trip, no waiting days for parts to arrive.
