2014 Scion IQ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2014 Scion IQ Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in Port Hueneme when the call came in from the Hueneme Beach side of town. Woman with a 2014 Scion IQ, parked on the street, key held together with electrical tape. She'd been nursing it for months.

When I got there and she handed it to me, I could see exactly what happened. The plastic head had split right at the key ring, the kind of clean crack that starts small and then just goes. The buttons had that soft, unresponsive feel you get when the contacts lose their tension from a warped shell. The blade itself was worn down enough that she said it had been getting sticky in the ignition lately.

The dealer had told her the whole key needed replacing and quoted her a number that made her stomach drop. What they didn't tell her was that the chip and board inside were perfectly healthy. I could see that before I even opened it.

I popped the shell on the hood of my van, moved the working internals into a fresh housing, cut a new blade matched to her vehicle, and seated a new CR2016 while I had it open. Tested the remote range, tested the buttons, ran the ignition. Everything came back clean.

She asked me why the dealer never mentioned that the board was still good. I told her some of them don't check. Some of them just replace.

She saved a good chunk that afternoon. Stayed parked right where she was the whole time.
