A guy was staying at a place over in South Surfside, Port Hueneme, partway through a road trip up the coast. His 2015 Scion IQ had been sitting in the lot all day and when he came back out, nothing. The key-not-detected warning was on the dash, and the car wasn't responding to the fob at all.
He had the one key. That was it.
He tried the usual things. Held the fob closer. Tried the door handle. Tried again. Then he looked up dealer options and found out the nearest appointment was the following afternoon, which meant a tow, a night of waiting, and a bill that made him wince. He called me instead.
I drove out to South Surfside that evening. The IQ was right in the lot where he left it. First thing I checked was the fob battery. CR2016, not the more common CR2032, and it had dropped enough voltage to cause intermittent communication with the vehicle. Swapped the battery, and the remote functions came back, but the car still wouldn't start.
That told me the battery was part of the problem, not all of it. The transponder side needed a fresh enrollment. I connected through the OBD port, cleared the old key data, and registered the replacement fob to the immobilizer. Cut the blade in the van. The whole job ran about 30 minutes.
He tested the lock, the unlock, and the start right there in the lot. It fired on the first turn. He mentioned the dealer quote again while he was putting his key away. I just told him to have a good trip north.
