A Meineke shop in Camarillo Heights called me, not the owner directly. That's how bad it had gotten.
The customer's XB was sitting in their bay after a brake job. The shop had brought in another locksmith to cut and program a replacement key while the car was already there. That locksmith hit an immobilizer error mid-process, couldn't recover, and left. No key. Car wouldn't start. The shop was now holding a customer's vehicle that wasn't their fault to fix.
When I got there, the car was in a security lockout. The previous programming attempt had written bad data and the immobilizer was rejecting everything, including the original key. That's the scenario most locksmiths don't carry the tools to resolve.
I pulled the ECU, connected my bench tool, read the memory directly, cleared the fault state, and wrote it back clean. From there I registered a fresh remote head key from scratch. Three buttons, all verified individually. Lock, unlock, and the third button, each one tested before I called it done. The immobilizer accepted the new key on the first attempt after the reset.
Total time was around 75 minutes counting ECU removal and reinstall. The alternative the shop had already priced out was a flatbed tow to the Toyota dealer, a multi-day turnaround, and a bill that was more than double what I charged. The customer got his car back the same afternoon.
