She was parked in the Premium Outlets Area in Camarillo, near the Five Below, on her lunch break. The 2009 Scion XB wasn't going anywhere.
She'd already called the Toyota dealer. They told her Scion keys needed to be done at the dealership, quoted her an appointment later in the week, and gave her a number she wasn't happy about. She went looking for another option and found me.
When I got there, the car would crank but not start. Classic sign that the transponder side of the remote head key had lost its registration with the immobilizer. The key blade was turning fine, the battery in the fob wasn't dead, but the car wasn't seeing the chip signal it needed to release the fuel system.
I plugged into the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer system, and registered a new key. The whole job was done in the parking lot while she stood nearby watching. When the engine caught and held on the first try, she just nodded like she'd been right to be skeptical of the dealer's story.
She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and she didn't lose half a workday driving to a service bay and waiting around.
