2009 Scion XB
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and what does each part do?

It's a single unit that handles two separate jobs. The metal blade operates the ignition cylinder and the door lock. Inside the head of the key, there's a transponder chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer every time you go to start the car. If that chip signal isn't recognized, the engine won't run even if the blade turns fine. The buttons on the outside send a separate radio signal to control the door locks remotely.

Q: What if I need a replacement key outside normal business hours?

We run seven days a week, 6 AM to 11:30 PM, including weekends and most holidays. Call us and if we're available, we come to you. No extra charge for evenings or weekends.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2009 Scion XB. Can I program it myself?

Not on this vehicle. The remote head key for the 2009 XB requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to register the transponder chip with the immobilizer. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that accomplishes that on these. The remote locking function is a separate matter and some owners have had luck with DIY pairing sequences for just the lock and unlock buttons, but that does nothing for the transponder.

Q: My 2009 Scion XB remote works fine but the car won't start. Is the key failing?

Possibly, but working buttons don't mean the transponder is healthy. The remote circuit and the transponder chip inside the key head are independent. One can fail while the other keeps working. On these, a common symptom of a transponder issue is that the engine cranks normally but cuts out immediately or never fires at all, while the lock and unlock buttons still function. If that's what you're seeing, the transponder registration is the likely cause.

2009 Scion XB Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was parked in the Premium Outlets Area in Camarillo, near the Five Below, on her lunch break. The 2009 Scion XB wasn't going anywhere.

She'd already called the Toyota dealer. They told her Scion keys needed to be done at the dealership, quoted her an appointment later in the week, and gave her a number she wasn't happy about. She went looking for another option and found me.

When I got there, the car would crank but not start. Classic sign that the transponder side of the remote head key had lost its registration with the immobilizer. The key blade was turning fine, the battery in the fob wasn't dead, but the car wasn't seeing the chip signal it needed to release the fuel system.

I plugged into the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer system, and registered a new key. The whole job was done in the parking lot while she stood nearby watching. When the engine caught and held on the first try, she just nodded like she'd been right to be skeptical of the dealer's story.

She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and she didn't lose half a workday driving to a service bay and waiting around.

The immobilizer on these Scions doesn't care where the programming happened. It just checks whether the chip code matches. I matched it.
