A woman in the Springville neighborhood in Camarillo called me from the Five Below parking lot on her lunch break. Her only key for the 2009 Scion XB had a cracked blade, and she was nursing it along with electrical tape. She told me she already called the Toyota dealer and they quoted her an appointment five days out.
I pulled up next to her XB and got to work on the hood of my van. Used my VVDI Key Tool to generate a 4D-67 transponder chip matched to her car's immobilizer ECU. Cut the TOY43 blade on my Condor, then registered the new HYQ12BBY through the OBD-II port. Her car runs Toyota's standard transponder immobilizer, no push-to-start, no smart key system. Just a physical key with a chip and three remote buttons: lock, unlock, panic.
Tested the blade in the ignition. Engine fired right up, no security light. Walked around the car clicking lock and unlock from different angles. Panic button, confirmed. She watched the whole thing from a bench with a sandwich.
The part that got her was the time. Fourteen minutes from pulling up to handing her the new key. She'd been holding that cracked key together for two weeks waiting on a dealer slot.
The immobilizer doesn't know whether the key was coded at a dealer bay or a parking lot in Camarillo. It just checks the chip.
