2005 Scion XB
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does programming take once you're at my car?

For a standard add-a-key on a 2005 XB, the programming itself is quick once I'm connected. The remote takes only a few minutes. The transponder side is a little longer but still well under a half hour in most cases. All-keys-lost takes more time because the system needs a full reset before it'll accept new keys, and that process has a timed sequence built in.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

Not even close. Dealers schedule appointments, and if they don't have your key blank in stock, they order it and you wait for shipping before you even bring the car in. I carry blanks and equipment on every call. One visit, same day, done. No appointment, no driving to a dealership, no waiting on parts.

Q: I bought a replacement remote online. Can you just program it, or do I need to buy one from you?

If the factory FCC ID on the fob you bought matches what the 2005 XB takes, I can program it. The remote on this vehicle is a separate unit from the ignition key, so pairing it doesn't involve the transponder side at all. That said, not every aftermarket remote sold online is actually compatible, even when the listing says it is. I've shown up to jobs where the part the owner ordered looked right but wouldn't take a signal properly.

Q: My 2005 XB remote stopped working but the car still starts fine. Is this a key problem or something else?

Start with the CR2032. The remote and the ignition are independent on this car, so a dead or weak fob battery has zero effect on starting the vehicle. That's actually how you know it's the remote side and not the transponder. Swap the battery first. If range comes back, you're done. If the remote still doesn't respond after a fresh CR2032 with good contact, then it's either a fob failure or the remote needs to be re-paired. Both are fixable.

2005 Scion XB Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A college kid over in Mission Oaks needed a spare key for his 2005 Scion XB. His parents had been telling him to get one for a solid year. He kept putting it off because getting to the dealer meant either skipping a morning class or burning a Saturday, and the nearest Toyota dealer was a 30-minute drive from Camarillo.

He called me the night before a noon class. I told him I could be at his place by nine, done before he had to leave.

I pulled up, decoded the lock, cut a fresh blade, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port. The separate keyless entry remote paired up without any drama. I walked him through the fob battery while we were standing there, showed him where the CR2032 sits, how to pop it, and what to look for before it gets weak enough to cause range problems.

He never left the driveway. I was gone before ten.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him for one key and told him to call ahead and schedule it. The quote alone was enough to make him keep putting it off. Getting both taken care of at the house for a fraction of that was what finally got him to actually do it.

Scion XB Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key after hours or on a weekend?▼

Call me. Dealer service departments in Camarillo and the surrounding area typically close by five or six and run limited Saturday hours. Lose your only key on a Friday night and you're not getting into a dealership until Monday. I work evenings and weekends, which is honestly when most people realize they need this done. A 2005 XB key job doesn't change based on what time it is.
